Player Leaves Basketball to Focus on School

June 24, 2009

I am not dreaming nor joking. This actually happened. A college basketball player is leaving the team to concentrate more on his studies. Jeff Jordan, son of basketball legend Michael Jordan, has decided to leave the University of Illinois Men’s Basketball team to focus on school. Not highly-recruited out of high school, he earned a scholarship as a walk-on last season.

The previous statement says a lot about the character and work ethic of Jeff Jordan. He did not use his famous name to get special treatment. His father may very well be the greatest basketball player who ever lived. Yet, Jeff Jordan chose not to cheapen his father’s legacy nor his self-respect to get a spot on the team.

Jeff Jordan has placed the term student- athlete in its proper order. Education comes first – no matter how good you are, no matter how good they say you are, and no matter who your father is. Until next next time…

Be a Good Sport!
